Good Times & Heartbreak

Published by rmhswill at 5:13 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

The last couple days have been very interesting for me.  I once again got to see my beloved Cubs in person (more on that in a moment), I saw an old friend, got to see the Celtics beat the Lakers in Game 1 at a bar in San Diego w/ Laker fans (that was fun for me) and had DirecTV installed in my house.  I will touch all of these momentarily, but first I have a confession to make.

I am in a love affair.  The subject though, is not a woman, rather a team, and that team is the Cubs.  And it’s like we have a long distance relationship.  You see these past 3 days I was able to see her in person and share some good times.  We had a few beers together.  We had some laughs.  We yelled and screamed and high-fived and we cursed and lowered our heads in defeat, but still had each other.  But now she is gone, off to another city and I am left to myself, w/ only texts (following the game on the internet) and phone calls (watching the game on TV).  Frustratingly, my phone company (actually TV company DirecTV) is making it very difficult for me to enjoy my long 3 hour chats w/ my love.  Apparently, I’m going to have to get HD to enjoy these sessions.  Sure, there will be occasions where it will work (when they’re on WGN, Fox, or ESPN), but I want to be able to talk to her every night (or afternoon in the Cubs’ case).  When Derrek Lee struck out to end the game and the streak on Wednesday night I was sad to see them go, but I expected we’d be just a phone call away the next evening, only to find out it’s not that simple after all.  I’m more than a little disappointed by DirecTV’s sports package and already wondering if it is really worth it?  I know I need to give it more time or an HDTV.  We’ll see.

I said my buddy, Jake, who I’ve known since Jr. High, came down here to San Diego to go to the game with me.  We had lots of fun and even shared a plate of nachos and got a good tour of San Diego after the game as neither of us had a clue where we were.  We eventually ate near my school at Pita Pit, before coming home to drink beer and play MLB 2K7.  He beat me the second game as I nearly fell asleep.  I’m not sure why I’m even sharing this except to say that we had lots of fun and I guess he is what helped me, at least momentarily, get over my love’s departure.

Then last night, as I said before, I went to a local Pizza/Bar place called Oggi’s with my friends who are Laker fans.  I personally don’t like either the Celtics or Lakers, but I guess I’d prefer to see KG, Pierce, and Allen get the rings they’ve all been so far away from their entire careers, despite being such great players.  Kobe’s already won three times and I’m tired of hearing that he’s even close to as good as MJ.  Plus, Red Auerbach in my opinion is the best NBA Coach of all-time and I think it would be ashame to see Phil Jackson break his record for titles against his team.  So because of that I am rooting for the Celtics.  Plus, my favorite Sports Writer, The Sports Guy, loves the Celtics, so there’s one more reason.  Anyway, so last night was quite enjoyable for me, listening to these Laker fans complaining about calls, convinced Pierce was faking his injury for dramatic effect (and if he did saying that “bush league”), and still confident that without Kobe contributing the Lakers could win.

1.  I will say the Celtics got the majority of the questionable calls in Game 1, but as the Home team, you generally will.

2.  If Pierce thought of that when he got hurt, he’s a genius.  I would applaud him for it.  Personally, I think he probably just overreacted.

3.  Kobe is the Lakers and if he doesn’t score more than he did last night, Laker fans should be very concerned.

One other note, I don’t think I heard anyone talk about, is Phil Jackson’s Game 1 record.  He has never lost a series in which he won Game 1.  Knowing that, it was absolutely imperative the Celtics win Game 1.  If they hadn’t, I would’ve had to change my opinion to say the Lakers would win the series.  Now, I feel very comfortable saying that even if the Lakers win all three at home (which I don’t think they will), Boston will still win this series.  Boston is very, very, very good at home and they’ve got all the momentum.  I don’t think Phil Jackson’s ever been in this kind of hole in a Finals Series before.  If he wants to beat Auerbach, he’s going to have to do his best coaching job to date.  All in all, though I’m feeling good about my $10 bet I made with my friend Jared. I need as I always lose money to him in video games.  That would make me feel a little better after losing my love, the Cubs.
