Goin’ Way Back!

Published by rmhswill at 6:40 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I mentioned in my last blog (was that yesterday?  I can’t remember because everything is really just pieced together for the last few days) that I have a friend who appears to be dating/in a relationship/”going out” with a girl I had, and I guess still kind of do have, a crush on.  There really are no new developments on that front.  But last night, I had recorded Spiderman 3, a movie I had not seen yet.  If you haven’t seen the movie I don’t want to ruin anything for you, but let’s just say there was a similar situation in that movie as what I have just described to you.  Spiderman, if you can believe gets dumped, only to go out with a series of different girls, only to feel empty and crawl back to his love, sort of.  Now I never went out with this girl, nor am I likely going to end up with several different girls, but I do think it was an interesting coincidence.  My point, frankly I don’t know, I just thought it was ironic, so I thought I’d share it w/ y’all.

On to more interesting and intriguing stuff, namely the Cubbies.  Last night, the offense exploded in the opening innings to score 7 runs in the first 2.  They cooled off after that, but Ryan Dempster was brilliant in his first complete game as a Cub.  But, unfortunately, the Cubs felt like they lost after the game as one of their best players, Alfonso Soriano, found out he was going to miss the next six weeks or so.  It is not even that the Cubs are that much worse of a team without him, rather the fact that a major injury like that can devastate a team psychologically.  And this afternoon, it seemed like it had, until the Bottom of the 9th, when Jim Edmonds tied the game on an opposite field Home Run to left.  This game was special because it was the 60th Anniversary of the Cubs being broadcast on WGN, something I am now very grateful for.  Both the Cubs and Braves were wearing throwback unis from 1948.  The Braves played in Boston back then and their hats, as a result, had a “B” on them.   The Cubs unis did not have pinstripes on them, nor names on the back.  Plus, their hats looked more like Chicago Bear hats, if you can picture their helmet.  And Carlos Zambrano, who of course would normally be wearing the blue alternates, if not for the special day, threw the ball like an old-timer, giving up just 2 runs on the day.  The thing is former Oakland A’s Ace, Tim Hudson, actually out-pitched Zambrano, giving up only 1 run in 7 innings.  And Chipper Jones looked human for once, going just 1-for-5 before being intentionally walked in the 11th Inning by Kerry Wood before he struck out Mark Teixeria to get out of any potential danger.  The Cubs then loaded the bases with nobody out when Reed Johnson pinch-hit for the 9th Inning hero, Edmonds, when the Braves brought in a southpaw.  On the very first pitch Johnson stood in there and got hit on the foot and Aramis Ramirez touched home plate and the Cubs swept another home series.  And all Cub fans, young and old, sang the new anthem, “Go Cubs Go!”  Let’s just hope the next six weeks don’t change too much.

As for tonight’s Game 4 of the NBA Finals, I am going to remain in the minority with my opinion and say that the Celtics will make the series 3-1.  Even if Rajon Rondo cannot play at full speed, the Celtics guards will better handle the pressure the Lakers try to put on them.  It may be more because of the scheme used than the people doing it, but I believe the Celtics will continue to play some pretty solid defense and their offense will be okay because there’s no way Paul Pierce plays as poorly as he did in Game 3 and Garnett cannot be much worse.  Even if Ray Allen comes back to earth, the trio should get much closer to the magic number (60) that they need to insure a win.  If they can just keep the score below 90, I say it’s a lock for Boston.  And then they can wrap it up Sunday evening in L.A.  I can only hope right?
